How Can I Help My Child Do Well in School?

I have been thinking about Stephen and Jonathan going to school one day. I know it won't be for a while (2014 and 2015) but here is some advice if your child is going to school for the first time or any grade level from a teacher's prospective.

• Keep your child healthy.

• Listen to your child and encourage him/her to tell you about school daily.

• Praise your child sincerely.

• Be patient. If you find yourself “losing it”, stop and do something else for a bit.

• Avoid comparing your children or comparing your child with those of a friend. Each child is unique. Children all learn at different rates. Let your child know that you love him/her and will continue to love them regardless of their performance in school.

• Provide a quiet place for homework.

• Put your child to bed early and establish a regular bedtime and routine.

• See that your child attends school regularly.

• Know exactly how your child is doing in school. Take the initiative and make an appointment with the teacher. Find out how you can help your child do his/her best.

• Limit your child’s TV viewing time. Be selective about what is watched.

• Read with your child. Try to read to your child everyday and listen to reading for about 15-30 minutes a day.

• Give your child books, board games, and puzzles as gifts.

• Use the public library and its children’s programs. It’s free!!

• Help your child practice good manners. Teach and expect “please”, “thank you”, and “excuse me”.
